Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will be able to learn the following:

  1. Understand the importance of effective communication in healthcare delivery and list the most important communication tools in modern healthcare.
  2. Recognize the positive impact of good communication on patient, family, healthcare provider and institutional goals.
  3. Identify barriers to effective communication in healthcare and strategies to overcome them.
  4. Understand the ethical, legal and cultural considerations related to communication in healthcare.
  5. Identify strategies for effective communication with all patients including those who have limited health literacy, language barriers, learning difficulties or special or cultural needs. 
  6. Know and apply the right words and phrases for establishing rapport with patients and families: the Language of Rapport (WE CARE, HEART).
  7. Develop effective therapeutic communication skills, (including active listening, empathy, and clear language etc.) based on what patients value as critical attributes of the healthcare provider (the like and dislike list).
  8. Master the art of daily patient and family communication employing the right “Language of Talk” translated to Arabic! 
  9. Identify best practices for communicating with patients in specific clinical situations: Breaking Bad News, Disclosure of Error, Dealing with Angry Patients or Relatives, Motivational Communication, End-of Life communication etc.
  10. Identify best practices for interprofessional communication: Hand-over using iPASS, SBAR, B-SOAP etc. 
  11. Master a 7-step (7Es) process for engaging your patients during your everyday practice.
  12. Develop a plan for improving communication in their own healthcare practice or organization: System Redesign Interventions.
