• Identify barriers to effective communication in healthcare and strategies to overcome them.
• Develop effective therapeutic communication skills, (including active listening, empathy, and clear language etc.) based on what patients value as critical attributes of the healthcare provider.
• Understand the role of cultural competence in effective communication in healthcare.
• List the most important communication tools in modern healthcare.
• Identify strategies for communicating with patients who have limited health literacy or language barriers.
• Develop skills for managing difficult conversations with patients and families.
• Understand the ethical and legal considerations related to communication in healthcare.
• Identify best practices for communicating with patients in specific clinical situations: Breaking Bad News, Disclosure of Error, Dealing with Angry Patients or Relatives, Motivational Communication etc.
• identify best practices for interprofessional communication: Hand-over using iPASS, SBAR, B-SOAP etc.
• Develop a plan for improving communication in their own healthcare practice or organization.
